Atopica for Dogs is used to treat atopic dermatitis (commonly called skin allergies) in dogs. Signs of skin allergies include itching, scratching, licking, gnawing, chewing, skin infections, hair loss, terrible odor, and sleepless nights. Atopica for Dogs requires a prescription from your veterinarian. Atopica is used to treat dogs who are suffering from atopic dermatitis – allergic skin disease. Ciclosporin exerts anti-inflammatory and antipruritic effects which can greatly improve your dog’s condition and quality of life.
Atopica is for the symptomatic treatment of chronic allergic dermatitis in cats, and for the treatment of chronic manifestations of atopic dermatitis in dogs. It contains Ciclosporin as the active ingredient, which helps to reduce the body and skin’s reaction to allergens, and calms the immune system to break the itch/scratch cycle and reduce inflammation.
Description
Atopica 100mg are a blue-grey oblong soft capsule and are generally administered at a dose of one a day and can slowly be reduced depending on how positive results are. Atopica 100mg Capsules for dogs contain 100mg of the active ingredient cyclosporine. Atopica Liquid preparation is also available for cats suffering with itching and scratching. Other causes of dermatitis such as ectoparasitic infestations, other allergies which cause dermatological signs (e.g. flea allergic dermatitis or food allergy) or bacterial and fungal infections should be ruled out before treatment is started.

Atopic dermatitis is one of the most common skin diseases in dogs. It is a genetic, predisposed inflammatory which causes the skin to develop hypersensitivity to environmental allergies. Typical allergens that can cause this disease is house dust mites, pollen, mould spores and occasionally foods. The most likely breeds of dog to be affected are: Terriers, Boxers, German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers.
The first signs of atopic dermatitis will be between the first 6 months and 3 years of your dog’s life. It causes pruritus (severe itching of the skin) but initially, there will be no signs of lesions. When the lesions are visible, they will start at friction areas or skin folds. Atopica is supplied in 10mg, 25mg, 50mg and 100mg capsules and sold in packs of 15. The 10mg and 50mg are a yellow-white oval capsule and the 25mg and 100mg are a blue-grey oblong capsule.
Special Instructions & Dose
Preferably Atopica 100mg capsules are administered to dogs without food, 1 to 2 hours before meal time. Atopica is also available in 10mg, 25mg and 50mg capsules to suit different sizes and breeds of dog. Dogs with atopic dermatitis may benefit from treatment with essential fatty acids (e.g. Viacutan) and medicated shampoos (e.g. Episoothe, Allermyl, Malaseb).
Special Warnings & Precautions for Atopica 100mg
Do not give 2 hours either side of feeding.
Administer directly into your dog’s mouth.
Not to be used in animals less than 6 months old or under 2kg in weight.
Do not store above 25oC
Possible Side Effects
Side effects are usually mild and often get better with time.
Common but not serious side effects include:
-Vomiting, reduced appetite, diarrhea. These effects are seen in approximately 1 in 3 dogs usually in the first 1-2 days after starting the drug and often improve over time. Your veterinarian may prescribe anti-vomiting medications or temporarily stop the drug if these occur.
-Overgrowth of gums (gingival hyperplasia) and skin growths (both are rare).
-Lethargy (tiredness, lack of energy). You don’t have to be overly concerned if you see any of these signs unless they are severe, worsen, or continue to be a problem. Contact your veterinarian if this happens.
Side effects that may be serious or indicate a serious problem:
-Infection. Watch for signs of infection such as fever (103°F-104°F), tiredness or lack of energy, sneezing, coughing, poor appetite, or runny eyes. If you see any of these side effects, contact your veterinarian immediately.
