Burdizzo Castrator For Sheep :The Burdizzo is a castration device which employs a large clamp designed to break the blood vessels leading into the testicles. When the device is used, the operator crushes the spermatic cords one at a time, leaving a space in between in order to prevent an interruption of blood-flow to the scrotum. Lambs should be castrated at a young age, preferably between 1 and 7 days of age. Castation in the first 24 hours may interfere with bonding and colostrum intake and is not recommended. As with tail docking, pain can be reduced if a clamp (using Burdizzo) is applied immediately before or after application of the ring.
Uses:
The Burdizzo is used to crush both spermatic cords, thus stopping blood flow to the testicles, which are then reabsorbed by the body. The Burdizzo method has been known to have a high failure rate. Failure to castrate using the Burdizzo method is usually due to improper technique or improper care of the clamp.
