Chickens vary in size depending on breed, age and gender. The average adult chicken weighs between 5 and 10 pounds. Roosters are usually larger than hens, and egg-laying chicken breeds are usually smaller than meat or mixed type breeds.

There are nearly 20billion chickens in the world – all the same species. Like dogs, chickens have been bread in all sorts of shapes and sizes as pets, meat or egg layers. There is no such thing as average. A normal range of weights can be anything from around 850gm to 4kg. The most normal size of chicken sold in supermarkets in Europe is probably around 1.5–1.8kg assuming you mean “dead weight” – not walking around weight!

The weight of a chicken is not a simple question to answer. There are so many different factors that influence the weight of a chicken. While the one that you roast for dinner weighs a certain amount, the one that laid the eggs for your breakfast weighs a totally different amount.

What Are The Largest Chicken Breeds?

The largest chicken breeds include the Jersey Giant, Brahma, Cochin, and Orpington. All of these birds average between 8 and 10 pounds in weight. They are also primarily known for being docile and easy to handle. Orpingtons are especially popular multi-purpose chickens that can be used for both meat and egg production.

Other large dual-purpose or egg-laying chicken breeds you may encounter are the Rhode Island Red, Rock and Wyandotte chickens. These breeds all average between 6 and 8 pounds in weight.

What Are The Smallest Chicken Breeds In The World?

Some of the smaller popular chicken breeds include the Leghorn, Polish and Game Hen. All of these breeds have hens that tend to weigh less than 5 pounds and roosters averaging about 6 pounds in weight.

However, you can get much smaller birds by raising bantams. A bantam chicken is essentially a miniature chicken, and many breeds come in both standard and bantam varieties. For example, an Ameraucana hen might weigh 5.5 pounds, but a bantam Ameraucana might weigh as little as 1.6 pounds. Most bantam breeds weigh under 2 pounds.

Some bantam breeds do not have full-size or “large fowl” equivalents. These chicken breeds are all very small in stature and are called “true bantams” as there are no full-size varieties. The smallest of these chicken breeds is the Serama, a Malaysian bird bred from other Asian bantam stock. These birds weigh just 500 grams and are primarily kept as pets. Other popular “true bantam” breeds include the Seabright, Pekin and Rosecomb chicken.

Bantam chickens obviously aren’t good for meat production, but they can be used for laying eggs. Bantam chicken eggs are smaller than regular eggs, but they are just as nutritious and taste the same as the eggs laid by larger hens. Bantams are also known for being broody, which can make them hard to keep for egg-laying.

Why Are Bantam Chickens So Small?

Bantam chickens display a type of dwarfism that is responsible for small size. This trait is sex-linked, which is useful for breeding because it helps to control the outcome. Breeding a bantam hen with a full-size rooster will result in full-

How Much Do Chickens Weigh?

Speaking in more broad terms, chickens usually weigh between 4 and 10 pounds (1.8 kg to 4.5 kg) with roosters weighing a pound or two more than hens.

Taking into account all of the weights of the different breeds of chickens in existence, the average weight of a chicken tends to be around 5.5 pounds (2.5 kg) for hens and 7.5 pounds (3.4 kg) for roosters. However, there is a lot of variability in this number, with some chickens weighing under 4 pounds and others weighing well over 10 pounds.

What If My Chicken Is Underweight?

If any of your birds are underweight, try supplementing their feed with a growth or layer ration for extra carbs and protein. You can also throw them a handful of scratch or cracked corn as these will provide a boost of calories to help them gain weight fast.

And make sure your chickens always have access to food whilst they’re awake. They’re not used to just eating a meal once or twice a day – they much prefer to graze throughout the day as they please.

An underweight chicken may just be going through a growth spurt, in which case they should soon regain weight if you follow these steps. However if they are unable to reach a healthy weight they may be suffering from parasites or a serious illness and you should consult your vet.

What If My Chicken Is Overweight?

You might think an overweight chicken is just living a good life, but it can be very bad for their health, give them difficulty laying eggs, and sometimes cause a prolapse (WARNING – not pretty and very unpleasant for your chicken!).

If you have an overweight chicken you’ll need to reduce the number of treats they get and ensure they always have access to a proper layer feed. You can still give them fruit and vegetables, but calorie heavy foods like scratch or cracked corn should be kept well away from them.

Exercise is important too. Make sure they get plenty of time outside their coop during the day, and as much space as possible to roam around and burn off excess calories. Our automatic door openers mean they can get out and about whilst you’re still in bed.

How To Weigh A Chicken

Now you know how much your chicken should weigh. But how do you find out how much they actually weigh? You can invest in some specially designed animal scales if you like, but there is a simple way if you have your own accurate bathroom scales:

  • First, take your scale out to your chicken run and find a flat, stable surface
  • Stand on the scale and make a note of the weight.
  • Don’t panic! Remember, you’re wearing clothes and shoes (we assume) so your actual weight will be lower.
  • Next, grab your chicken and get back on the scale and make a note of the new weight.
  • Finally, subtract the first reading from the second reading and you have your chicken’s weight!
