Levamisole hydrochloride is a synthetic imidazothiazole anthelmintic used extra-label for the treatment and prevention of roundworms in poultry. The drug is also well known for its immunomodulatory effects, and is used as an adjutant treatment for colon cancer in humans. The mechanism of action of levamisole as an anthelmintic is related to its agnositic activity towards the L-subtype nicotinic acetylcholine receptors in the worm’s muscles. This agonistic action reduces the capacity of the male worms to control their reproductive muscles, thus limiting their ability to copulate. Levamisole is sold as a soluble drench powder which is added to the flock’s drinking water source. It’s effective against most adult species of roundworms, including Ascaridia galli, Heterakis gallinarum, and Capillaria obsignata. However, it does not have any effect on tapeworms.

Withdrawal period: There is a 16.4 day withdrawal period for laying hens producing eggs. This means that for 9 days after receiving this medication, the eggs produced by the hens should not be sold for human consumption. Storage/Stability: Levamisole products should be stored at room temperature (15-30°C), unless otherwise instructed by the manufacturer; avoid temperatures greater than 40°C.

Levamisole is a synthetic broad-spectrum anthelmintic, which is active against adult and larval stages of gastrointestinal nematodes and lungworms in cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. Levamisole paralyses the worms, after which the worms are expelled in the faeces (within 24 hours after parenteral administration). A therapeutic dose of levamisole is non-toxic. The product may be given to pregnant animals and to animals in poor physical condition.
