Marketing of organic products is one of the limiting factors in organic farming. I want you to erase that mindset that organic products are only meant for some class of people. No. everyone has the right to eat what is good always. Organic farmers just need to utilize marketing strategies that are accommodating enough to capture the populace.
As good as organic products are, I still wonder why most consumers are not inclined with the benefits of consuming organic products. Does it mean that people are not conscious or worried about what they eat or perhaps the marketing strategies deployed by most organic farmers are not effective enough? I would rather settle for the latter.
This article is aimed at proffering solutions to the marketing challenges of organic products through uncommon marketing strategies am about to reveal.
I would start by asking these series of rhetorical questions you should keep in your heart as an organic farmer.
- How often do you visit the hospital as an organic farmer?
- What kind of relationship do you keep with your neighbors?
- Is organic product expensive?
- How do you justify the quantity and quality of your organic product?
- Are you actually practicing organic farming?
I would base my discussion on these questions; I would relate them to how you could start by creating a “Niche Market” for your organic products and later increase your market potentials. Let us start!
Why you should visit hospitals and other medical centers seldomly?
As an organic farmer, you need to understand your market sources. Your first and the most viable market are people that are conscious about what they eat. They are mostly found in hospitals and medical centers. You do not need to have an outlet in the hospital premises but you can always seek referral opportunities from hospitals and other medical centers. How?
At times, doctors or medical practitioners do not really prescribe drugs to patients in some cases, all they do is to advise the patient on what to eat and not to eat. It is left to the patient to source the food.
Imagine a scenario where the doctor or nutritionist recommends a particular organic food and he backed his recommendation with your business card, referring the patient to you to effect his recommendation. It is as simple as that and it can go a long way in marketing your organic product, irrespective of your scale of production.
Pay courtesy visits to hospitals and medical centers periodically; to familiarize your service and preach the gospel of your organic products. Do not go alone; go in a team with all members, including yourself, wearing your brand. I mean, wear a sign that shows your brand. It is a kind of advertisement.
How closely related are you with your neighbors?
Everybody you know, directly or indirectly, is your potential customer; it only depends on how best you can convert the relationship to not just for mutual or communal benefits but also economic benefits.
Your neighborhood is a huge source of economic benefits for your organic farm; it only depends on how you present your organic products to your neighbors.
Think about how these strategies can increase your organic product sales:
- Having banners of your organic products at the entrance of your estate.
- Convincing at least two (2) people about the benefits of eating organic products.
Lastly, if I were you, I would develop a platform, online via social media or offline during community meetings. Where, at the closing of the function, I discuss when my next harvest would be, perhaps I could develop a list of preorders for my organic products.
Are organic products expensive?
Most consumers complain about the expensive price of organic products; I began to wonder why organic products are that expensive when all input used are natural and in most cases, are readily available.
I later observed and concluded that most organic farmers fix the price of their organic farm products from their will and not from the real cost of the production.
They believe because the vegetable is organic, it must compulsorily be sold at a high price even if the cost of producing the organic vegetable is relatively low. This is not a good market approach in organic product production; why? Because organic production is yet to find its global acceptance and stability, thus, the price difference must be at an affordable level.
I do not know the nature or types of your organic inputs you use but I do know that organic farming involves creativity and innovation that are targeted at reducing the cost of production to the barest minimum.
In organic crop production, aside from the cost of land preparation and seeds procurement, crop protection controls the other costs of your production. You can use any of these organic pesticides from neem plant to control insect pests and control weeds using any of these organic weed control methods. I recommend you use any of those options, as they have been proven effective at their core actions and in reduction of the cost of production.
The same thing applies to organic livestock production, either chicken or other livestock. These herbs and any of these bio-security measures are all you need to keep your flock healthy and productive always.
Justifying the quantity and quality of the organic product
As an organic farmer, do you really care about feedback from your customers? Like, do you even try to know if your customers love what they purchase from you?
If you have not been doing this then you are making a lot of mistakes. Organic product consumption is a system you are trying to revive; hence, you should deploy every form of strategies to push it to your potential customers.
One of the most effective ways of achieving this is sharing reviews and comments of your existing customers with your potential customers. If permitted, include the contact of the customer you are sharing his or her review; it builds confidence and assurance in your potential customers and helps to strengthen the relationship of your existing customers.
Are you actually practicing organic farming?
Do you really know the standards of organic farming for both crop and livestock production?
Have heard some farmers say they practice “semi-organic farming”; this really cracks me a lot. There is no term like semi-organic farming. It is either you practice organic farming or inorganic farming, it has no intermediate.
Perhaps you do not know; there are standards for organic farming for both crops and livestock. You cannot just wake up one day, get a land, start cultivating without the use of chemicals, and conclude, you are practicing organic agriculture. It is not affirmed like that.
For organic crop production, the activities of the land must be traced back to not less than 15 years. During this period of review, no chemical residue must be traced to the land. Such land is in line with the standard of organic crop production, thus, it can be used and certified for organic farming.
The same concept applies to organic livestock production. If you want to produce organic chickens or egg, the activities of the site must be traced back to about 5 years; if no chemical residue is found or used on the land; such land is fit for organic livestock production.
Lastly, on marketing strategies for organic products in Nigeria; join organic farmers association or be in the circle of organic farmers like Justagric Whatsapp Platform.
