10 Pre-Emergence Herbicides For Weeds Control

It is very important you control weeds, grasses, broadleaf, and sedges, anywhere they emerge, whether in your homes, farm or workplace. The control of weeds is a must prior to and after planting. Herbicides are the known chemicals used to control weeds commercially.

There are two types of herbicides, we have

  • Preemergence Herbicides
  • Post-emergence herbicides.

The preemergence herbicides are those types of herbicides used for weed control before the emergence of weeds, hence, they kill weed seeds surviving in the soil. They are applied to the soil in the absence of the intended plants.

On the other hand, post-emergence herbicides are herbicides applied to the weeds when they appear above the soil surface. In most cases, preemergent herbicides are mostly used for weed control in homes and farms as a preventive measure.

How Pre-emergence herbicides work

The mode of action of herbicide differs with the current situation; you apply pre-emergence herbicides before the intended plant emerges. What these types of herbicide does is to kill the weed seeds so that they do not germinate to compete with your plant for space, water, and nutrients.

Do not apply any preemergence herbicide if your plant has emerged; if you do, you may lose your plant. This is a common mistake most farmers make as they intend to control weeds on their farm.

These preemergent herbicides are highly effective at controlling all forms of weeds such as annual grass, sedges, and broadleaf weeds; examples are Guinea grass, Elephant grass, waterleaf, spear grass, nimblewill, bent grass, crabgrass, Chickweed, ground ivy, Dandelion, yellow foxtail, clover, yellow nutsedge, Buffalo grass, and dormant bermudagrass, etc.

The benefits of using preemergence herbicide are copious; it saves you the cost of weeding for not less than 3 months. So, if you are planting crop like maize, you would not bother about weeds till you harvest, if you have diligently followed the prescribed dosage.
