Sheep Lice Treatment Ivermectin

It’s that time of year where everyone begins to prepare for winter and to consider appropriate treatment of the parasitic problems that our stock carry in to housing, namely liver fluke, nematodes and ectoparasites. Of the ectoparasites, pediculosis is the biggest cause for concern in cattle when housed and one of the biggest issues in sheep, second only to scab. Ironically lice infestation, treatment and control are often overlooked by the farmer and the vet leading to heavy challenges with welfare implications and loss of margin.

Ivermectin Sheep Drench is a ready-to-use, free-flowing solution of ivermectin. It is formulated to deliver the recommended dose rate of 0.2 mg ivermectin per 1 kg body weight given orally at a volume of 3.0 mL per 26 lbs body weight.

Types of Lice

Lice are divided in to two functional groups: Chewing lice and sucking lice. The chewing lice have robust round heads and feed on skin and hair debris. Sucking lice have piercing mouthparts and feed on the blood and serous fluid of the host animal. Sheep within the UK are only affected by chewing lice.

The sheep body louse (Bovicola ovis)

Bovicola ovis is most common and disrupts feeding patterns, leads to fleece damage/loss and self-inflicted trauma. Spread occurs from animal to animal by close contact. The slow reproductive capacity of Bovicola ovis results in a gradual build-up of louse numbers over several months. This louse is surprisingly large at around 3mm in length.

Coughing may be observed in some animals during and for several minutes following drenching.

Do not underdose. Ensure each animal receives a complete dose based on a current body weight. Underdosing may result in ineffective treatment, and encourage the development of parasite resistance.

  1. What caught my attention is when you said that lice spread from animal to animal by close contact, and it causes a disruption to feeding patterns. This reminded me of the livestock of my father on his farm that I visited last Monday morning. He mentioned the lice problem of his sheep, so it will ve best for him to find an effective lice treatment solution as soon as possible.s
