Goats eat mainly Hay which is the main source of their nutrients apart from their range. It is what they mostly eat in the winter when they don’t have access to the range. The hay that goats eat can be grass or a legume or alfalfa. 

Generally, each goat needs about two to four pounds of hay per day, minus what they might forage on pasture. Quality grass hay is good for all goats. Also, they eat some long-stemmed hay every day to keep their rumen functioning at its best. 

Goats do not eat anything and everything they see. When it comes to normal forage, they can be rather careful about what type of weeds, grasses, and hay they will consume. Goats can be rather choosy eaters and won’t just eat anything. People often misunderstand this matter, but a goat farmer will know that they do not eat everything. 

Do Goats Eat Everything?

Although, you may find that goats eat paper, household trash, etc. but do they digest the food? The answer is that those things cannot digest properly. Besides, if you consider humans, we can eat everything but does it digest?  Again, we may die if we continue eating everything that can go through our mouth. The same thing is applicable to goats. They can die eating something poisonous or not digestible. That is why goats are browsers, always selecting what food to eat. As a farmer, it is not a wise thing to feed your goats everything that is eatable. You should focus on feeding them good food that will ensure healthy growth and weight.

List Best Of Foods For Goats

1. Alfalfa hay

Alfalfa hay is one of the best and favourite foods of goats.

It is the best for does in the last trimester of pregnancy as it helps in milk production for kids. 

Bucks (male goats) may not need that much calcium, so you have to feed them alfalfa in moderation.

Alfalfa is a great source of calcium and protein that results in fast growth for young kids (baby goats) and makes them gain reasonable weight.

However, somewhere between six months and a year old it’s a good idea to transition them over to grass hay rather than alfalfa.

Goats need a healthy balance of calcium and zinc since they bind together. 

So, if you feed your goats with too must calcium producing alfalfa hay, they may wind up with zinc deficiency.

You should include quality grass hay for at least part of their diets. It’s really the only hay that bucks and does that are drying off should have.

Well, you should know that hay cubes are made for cows and horses, so they are generally too large for goats to eat. 

However, you can break the cubes apart into smaller pieces so your goats can eat them. 

But that’s a lot of work to do on a regular basis especially when you have to feed a large flock of goats.

So, just focus on feeding the goats with grass hay.

4. Chaffhaye

Hay is the foundation of your goat’s diet if they aren’t able to forage. However, it’s also not filled with the essential vitamins and minerals they require to thrive.

This is where Chaffhaye comes into play. Chaffhaye is premature alfalfa or grass that has been cut early. After cutting, cut it up further into smaller chunks and spray with molasses. Add a culture of Bacillus subtillis to the grass and vacuum seal it into a bag. The Chaffhaye will ferment while in the bag. This adds good bacteria to the hay which makes it easier for the goats to digest. The fermentation process also adds more nutrients, minerals, and energy to their food.

As you probably already know, the biggest danger in keeping goats is their digestive systems. If they get messed up, they can die very easily. Anything that adds good bacteria to their gut is a huge bonus.

5. Food supplements for goats

Goats need calcium, Phosphorus, salt and other essential minerals for healthy growth.

They also need some vitamins which help them with bloating problem. 

Vitamins E, A, and D are very necessary for both baby and adult goats.  

Even though they can find some amount of these vitamins and mineral in their food, you can still add some food supplements every now and then.

iv. Black Oil Sunflower Seeds

6. Garden and kitchen Scrap

Scraps have a great nutritious demand on the field of the feeding of the goats. It saves your time as well as your expense.

Of course, the scraps will have to be vegetables, fruits and other healthy things the goats can eat.

Scraps like tomato end, banana peels, garlic skins, and orange peels are of great purpose in this regard.

Furthermore, human foods, like veggies, fruits, and also dried fruits will be useful for this purpose. 

Sweet feeds are not really great for the goats.

This is because it can make the goats lazy and dependable on these junk products.

7. Grain

People who are unable to provide the necessary foods for the goats can fill the gap with 12-16% of grains. 

Grains, just like hay are an essential item in goat feed list in any part of the world.

Generally, you have to feed grain every day.

Baby goats may not digest grains properly, but mature goats need about 30% – 40% grain in their foods.

Grains for goat feed can be rolled, texturized, whole, or pelleted.

Products like oats, rye, corn, barley and moil are known as cereal grains that provide the consisting elements.

8. Water

Of course, no class of food is complete without water.

Goats need to drink a lot of clean water to aid digestion and healthy living.
