Do you want to rear chickens with low mortality, highly rugged, with a high feed conversion rate? Iโ€™ve got good news for you. It is the Noiler chicken, also called neola, or nuwella; Noiler birds are 5 times better than our local bird and 3 times more disease-resistant than broiler chickens.

The Noiler is a dual-purpose chicken breed capable of producing meat and eggs in high quantities, though noilers are primarily bred for meat production. Noiler chicken is developed in Nigeria by Amo Farm Sieberer Hatchery. Amo Hatchery is the only hatchery producing quality Noiler chicks in Nigeria, and the birds are commonly named Amo Noilers.

Before considering the rearing of noilers, it is important that you know what to expect in terms of output and during the production process. We have come up with the characteristics of noiler chickens that show how productive this breed is. We have looked into the following characteristics:

  • Appearance
  • Growth rate
  • Egg production level
  • Meat production level
  • Hatchability and Broodiness
  • Housing Requirement
  • Low Production Cost
  • Hardiness and High Survival Rate

1. Appearance of Noiler Chicken

Noilers come in various colors: black, white, yellowish, brown, and grey specks, and this makes them beautiful and well-camouflaged. All the same, you should expect to come across some rather ugly Noilers.

2. Growth rateย

Noiler rearing is fast becoming very popular because these birds grow fast. Noilers grow big and meaty without necessarily eating a lot of store-bought feeds. Even if you let them loose to free-range, Noilers will soon convert food to meat and get heavier.

Also, Noiler feeds can be cheaply sourced; you can feed them kitchen leftovers and edibles like rice, yellow maize, Omena, chicken mash, soya, and worms. To make sure their growth rate stays sharp, you need to deworm and vaccinate your birds on time. By the fourth or fifth month, they attain a weight of 3 – 4 kilograms.

3. Eggs Production

Noiler chickens lay bigger eggs at maturity. Noiler pullets should start laying eggs at five months old (some do this at four months). As soon as they begin their egg-laying session, Noiler layers can lay for two years.

Noiler eggs are extremely big and with dark-yellow yolks when compared with our local chicken. The yolk color of noiler eggs is associated with good health, explaining why the eggs command a good price in the market.

4. Noiler Meat Production

As earlier stated, Noilers produce meatier and sweeter-tasting meat in high amounts. Noilers add meat and weight quickly, and the farmer doesnโ€™t have to churn out lots of money to ensure it. Their meat production remains high as long as you take good care of them and feed them properly.

In about 12 weeks, noiler chicken will be mature enough for slaughtering, weighing 3.5kg or more at maturity. Noiler cocks have proven to weigh more than this. Also, noiler meat is evenly distributed over the chickenโ€™s body parts. Noiler chickens are perfect alternatives to Broiler chickens in terms of meat production.

5. Hatching and Broodiness

One of the disadvantages of rearing noiler chicken is that Noiler hens do not sit on their eggs, so they cannot hatch. As a result, you will require the service of a local hen, or an incubator, or buy some readily hatched noiler chicks. If fertile Noiler eggs are incubated, about eighty percent of the eggs will hatch.

6. Housing

Noiler birds can either be free-range birds or semi-free-range birds. If you have enough land space, the free-range method is almost perfect. However, make sure that you build a fenced chicken run to keep your birds safe. Noiler chicken breeds are highly rugged and adaptable; noilers are suitable for rural communities and smallholder farmers; they can address the challenges of animal food insecurity.

If you have a previous chicken cage that meets the poultry house construction standards, you can keep your Noiler birds inside. Otherwise, you should get a special semi free-range rearing system that is suitable for compact spaces.

7. Low Cost of Production

Raisingย chickens is comparatively cheaper than raising other birds.ย Most poultry farmers report that Noiler chickens are easier to raise and manage. Because noilers are less expensive to keep, they can scratch the ground for food and still convert it excellently to extra meat. With the best practices put in place, you will sell noiler eggs and meats in huge quantities and make tons of cash.

8. Hardiness and High Survival Rate

In terms of health, Noilers are hardy chicken breeds; they have an excellent survival rate close to that of local chickens. Noilers are less susceptible to diseases and with lower maintenance levels. Noilers are even more disease-resistant than some exotic chicken breeds.
