Chickens are susceptible to several infections and illnesses at every growth stage and medium of rearing, especially when raised under a deep litter system, hence, antibiotics are a must-have in the chickens’ โ€œfirst aid boxโ€. Antibiotics are substances served to chickens to prevent and treat infections of any kind; they could be of various origins, organic and synthetic antibiotics. Synthetic antibiotics are very common and used commercially because it is readily available and quite fast in action.

Poultry farmers are becoming very conversant with the health of their consumers in relation to the meat or egg produced; there is increased awareness of the possible risk of antibiotic residues in chicken and the resistance effects it has in humans when such chicken is consumed. This risk and its potential health hazard prompted the need to have organic antibiotics as an alternative to the synthetic antibiotics commonly in use. hence, the need to embrace organic poultry production.

An Overview of Organic Poultry Farming

Organic poultry farming is the system whereby all the medication inputs, like antibiotics, and vaccines, used by the farmers in the production of chicken meat and eggs from the poultry are obtained from natural organic recipes. The aim of organic poultry production is to price poultry produce that is safe for human consumption eliminating the risk of antibiotic resistance.

One of the problems or probably the limiting factors of organic poultry farming is the medication used to maintain and sustain the health of the birds. Most of the medications used in poultry farming are inorganic; talk of the vaccines used to prevent chicken diseases, dewormers, and the approved antibiotics for poultry and other medications.

However, in order to make organic poultry farming sustainable and achievable, lots of studies have been carried out on some herbs for poultry birds and they have been proven to be very effective; these organic antibiotics are broad-spectrum and cover lots of infections. The recipes used to make these organic antibiotics for chickens are natural and can easily be gotten at a relatively low cost

One of the advantages of using these organic chicken antibiotics is that they do not contaminate the chickenโ€™s produce (egg and meat), thereby making the eggs or meat safe for consumption at any period and aside from providing strong protection for the chickens against common poultry diseases and infections, organic antibiotics also impact better taste to the poultry produce. So, it is safe to say organic antibiotics improve the quality of chickens’ health and their produce.

Recipes Used As Organic Antibiotics For Chickens

Making organic antibiotics for chickens is quite inexpensive; the materials needed can be cheaply sourced around the neighborhood. The following recipes can be used in making organic antibiotics for chickens.

  • Raw or unadulterated honey.
  • Garlic
  • Ginger
  • Scent leaf
  • Turmeric
  • Cayenne pepper

The above recipes are natural and have been tested to be very potent antibiotics. Some farmers had testified to the efficacy of these recipes.

How To Make Organic Antibiotics For Chickens With Raw Honey

Raw honey, I repeat raw honey, is one of the essential commodities and blessings on all living things. Raw honey has copious benefits for both animals and man. Raw honey is a potent antibiotic and can serve as a natural remedies for chickens; it can be used to cure any form of infection or disease.

Using pure honey in poultry would not only serve as a natural antibiotics but also anti-stress to alleviate all forms of stress in your birds, such as heat stress. Although, quite expensive it serves a wide range of benefits that would greatly boost the productivity and profitability of your flock.

Mix the raw honey in clean water at a rate of 2ml per liter daily for 7 days. Give your chickens this mixture to drink and watch them grow healthy. It is safe and does not have withdrawal periods like synthetic antibiotics do; you can slaughter your chicken anytime and eat their eggs as they produce.

How To Make Organic Antibiotics For Chickens With Garlic And Ginger

Garlic and Ginger are a must-have medical recipe in an organic poultry farm; they are part of the ayurvedic medicine for poultry. The combination of these recipes gives a cheap and highly effective natural antibiotic. They are broad-spectrum natural antibiotics like raw honey. Ginger and garlic can effectively control and treat poultry diseases such as chronic respiratory disease, cough, and coccidiosis.

To make this organic antibiotic, weigh 500 grams of ginger and 500 grams of garlic with or without 300 grams of turmeric. Blend these recipes and mix in 2 liters of water. Strain the mixture to get the liquid antibiotics. Mix 5 ml of the liquid antibiotics with 1 liter of water; give your chicken the antibiotics in their drinker for 5 days consecutively; if you are using a nipple drinker, it is best you strain the mixture to avoid blocking the nipple with the solid particles in the mixture.

Have heard lots of farmers testifying to the efficacy of these recipes, either used singly or when combined. The screenshot below, from justagric whatsapp group, shows the testimony made by a farm from Kenya on how he used ginger to cure cough in his chicken flock in less 24 hours.

How To Make Organic Antibiotics For Chickens With Scent Leaf

I have known scent leaf to be a very strong antibiotic for a long time; personally, I do extract the juice and drink. Scent leaf is a very good natural antibiotic that can be used by man and animals. The use of scent leaf for poultry has several benefits; apart from being an effective natural antibiotic, scent leaf has a distinct aroma that helps improve the quality of the meat from the chicken; it makes the meat tastier and more nutritious.

To prepare this organic antibiotic, weigh 100 grams of scent leaf and blend in 1 liter of water. Strain the mixture to separate the liquid for your chickens. Mix 5 ml of the liquid antibiotics with 1 liter of water, and serve your chicken through their waterer for 7 days consecutively.

How To Make Organic Antibiotics For Chickens With Turmeric And Cayenne Pepper

Turmeric and dried cayenne pepper can be used to treat coccidiosis in chickens. They are also very potent antibiotics and can be used for chickens without any discrimination.  You can have the two mixed together and served on a regular basis. Weigh 50 grams of dried cayenne pepper and 300 grams of turmeric, and blend in 2 liters of water. Strain the mixture to get the liquid antibiotic; mix the 5ml of the liquid antibiotics with 1 liter of water; you can serve your chickens 3 days consecutively to prevent and treat any infection.

With these organic antibiotics, organic poultry farming can be achieved and the cost of production can be greatly reduced without compromising the quality and quantity of egg or meat produced. Currently, there is no precise or standard formulation for the preparation and dosage of these organic chicken antibiotics using the recipes above; however, you can use any of these formulations and observe the response of your birds; you can always make adjustments anytime you wish.

My third batch of baby chicks could definitely benefit from natural antibiotics, as two of them have symptoms of coccidiosis, and now I am fearful that they all may get the disease. By the way, there are various articles that support oregano oil as a natural antibiotic and am wondering if this oil can be helpful. Currently, I am giving the chicks some cayenne pepper with turmeric well blended in their feed, and they appear to be doing better.

    Thank you,
    Will

      Give broilers please

  21. Isola Oluwatoba Avatar

I was supplied with adulterated broiler chicks. They are presently eating well but their performance is characteristic of cockerels, in terms of weight gain, chestlessness and growth. When I discovered it was not purely bred broilers, I switched from finisher to grower because the feed conversion is not encouraging. Their weights now averaged 1.5-1.8 at 8wks.
I am targeting a reasonable weight for marketing, to enable restocking with purely bred broilers. I’m not contemplating switching back to finisher.
    What’s your suggestion.

You can feed the grower, it is cheaper but when you are close to sales point (10 days to selling), use finisher.

Hello, from your description, it looks like Newcastle disease. Firstly, look into your medication and vaccination. In this case, give antibiotics to stabilise the chicken then resume the vaccination schedule.
