Nuflor and Draxxin are injectable antibiotics used for treating respiratory diseases in cattle, sheep, pigs, and other livestock animals. These antibiotic injections have been used to effectively control foot rots in livestock animals. While Nuflor and Draxxin treat and prevent closely similar infections in livestock, there are certain differences between them.

You may be in the middle of making a decision as to which of Nuflor and Draxxin to include in your livestock medication. The active ingredients in Nuflor and Draxxin are not the same, same as the recommended doses and targeted species of livestock.

Difference between Nuflor and Draxxin

Nuflor Vs Draxxin: Active ingredients

NUFLOR is an Injectable solution of synthetic antibiotic developed to treat and prevent several infections in livestock animals; Each milliliter of sterile Nuflor injection contains 300 mg of florfenicol, 250 mg N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP), 150 mg propylene glycol and polyethylene glycol q.s.

On the other hand, Draxxin antibiotic injection is developed to treat certain bacterial infections in livestock animals. Each milliliter of Draxxin injection contains 100 mg of tulathromycin and 120 mg of ketoprofen as a free acid in a 50% propylene glycol vehicle.

Nuflor Vs Draxxin: Usage and Indications

Both Nuflor and Draxxin are antibiotic infections; the difference can also be separated in their usage and what they are meant to treat in livestock animals, particularly the bovine and swine species.

In cattle, Draxxin antibiotic injection is approved mainly for the prevention and treatment of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) associated with four major bacterial causes namely Mannheimia haemolyticaPasteurella multocidaHistophilus somni and Mycoplasma bovis.

In Pigs, Draxxin Injectable antibiotics are approved for the prevention and treatment of swine respiratory disease (SRD) caused by five major bacterial namely Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Haemophilus parasuis, and Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae.

Draxxin is also the treatment of pink eyes disease (infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis) caused Moraxella bovis; and for the treatment of interdigital necrobacillosis (bovine foot rot) caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum and Porphyromonas levii.

While Draxxin is administered for the treatment and control of cattle and swine, Nuflor injectable solution is approved for the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases in cattle and sheep. Nuflor is a broad-spectrum injectable antibiotic effective against most Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria isolated from livestock animals.

Nuflor is used for the prevention and treatment of Bovine Respiratory Disease (BRD) in cattle caused by Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida, and Histophilus somni. As well as for the treatment of ovine respiratory tract infections in sheep caused by Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida

Nuflor Injectable antibiotic is also used for the treatment of bovine interdigital phlegmon (foot rot) caused by Fusobacterium necrophorum and Bacteroides melaninogenicus. Generally, Nuflor is approved for use to treat diseases caused by florfenicol-susceptible bacteria.

Nuflor Vs Draxxin: Administration and Dosage

The administration and dosage of Nuflor and Draxxin are different; the dose for prevention is different from that of treatment for each species of livestock.

Both Nuflor and Draxxin Injectable Solution can be administered using either the Intramuscular or the subcutaneous route using a 16-gauge needle. The injection should be given only in the neck region. Each injection site can only accommodate 10 ml.  

Using Nuflor injection for treatment of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and foot rot:

  • Through intramuscular route: Give 1ml per 15kg body weight. NUFLOR should be administered for two days.
  • Through subcutaneous route: Give 2ml per 15kg body weight. This should be administered only once.
  • The dose volume given at any one injection site should not exceed 10ml.

Using Nuflor injection for prevention of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) and foot rot:

  • Through the subcutaneous route: Give 2ml per 15kg body weight to be administered once.

The recommended dose of Draxxin is 1.1 ml per 100 lbs for treatment and not more than 2 ml are injected at one site. In cattle, it is injected under the skin at the neck region while it is injected into the neck muscle in pigs and sheep.  

Nuflor Vs Draxxin: Precautions and Withdrawal

The Withdrawal period is the recommended time frame required after administration of a medication before an animal’s product can used for human consumption.

When cattle are given Draxxin injection, it must not be slaughtered for human consumption within 18 days, it is 13 days for pigs and 16 days for sheep

Also, you should note that Draxxin is not for use in female dairy cattle over 1 year of age, as well as dry dairy cows to avoid drug residues in milk and in calves born to these cows or heifers. Similarly, Draxxin should not be given to beef calves less than 2 months of age, dairy calves, and veal calves.

The withdrawal period of Nuflor is quite longer than that of Draxxin. Cattle and sheep given Nuflor must be kept for about 45 days for slaughter for meat or other forms of consumption.

Nuflor Vs Draxxin: Cost

Draxxin is more expensive than Nuflor. The price of each injection varies with its size. The size of Nuflor ranges between 100ml to 500ml, while that of Draxxin ranges between 50 ml to 500ml.

The price of Nuflor ranges between $82.39 to $344.99 for 100ml and 500ml respectively. Also, the price of Draxxin ranges between $165.99 to $1,369.99 for 50ml and 500ml respectively.
